Abstract
In 1995, Kobe earthquake resulting in large-scale liquefaction caused obvious damage to pile foundations of buildings, containers and piers. The most serious damage area to piles is in the liquefied soils with lateral spreading. The model tests are conducted in the Center of Public Works Research Institute in Tsukuba, Japan. The responses for a pile foundation in lateral spreading at a port are studied. The pile foundation is located in liquefied -backfill layer where sheet piles are employed for revetment work. The main purpose is to conduct a three-dimensional effective stress analysis to examine the responses of the pile foundation in a lateral spreading due to soil liquefaction. In addition, this study also investigates the dynamic responses of the pile foundation to several configuration changes.
