Abstract
The effect of spatial variability on analysis of excavation-induced basal-heave in soft ground in investigated. This kind of study on the effect of spatial variability on basal-heave analysis of braced excavation is very innovative. The basal-heave analysis proposed by the Taiwan building code and the random field theory are adopted to be able to simultaneously consider the uncertainties of geomaterials and spatial variability in such analysis using the Monte Carlo simulation. An actual excavation case, in which the basal-heave occurs, located in Taipei basin is used to perform the intended analysis of basal-heave on this case. Compared with the conventional analysis method for basal-heave, the analysis results revel that the probability of failure against basal-heave will reduce when the spatial variability is considered in the analysis.
