Abstract
The main purpose is to study the seismic response and failure mechanism of high earth-rockfill dams under earthquakes by using dynamic elasto-plastic methods. The main concerned aspects are the shear strain, the permanent deformation as well as the grid deformation during earthquakes considering the seismic wave input of one-direction and two-direction. The results show that larger deformation occurs in the upper scope (1 / 5) of the dam, and the vertical seismic input has obvious impact on the slope stability. The results of the shaking table tests verify the reasonableness of FLAC procedures in simulating the seismic response of high earth-rockfill dams. At the same time, the influences of parameter changes of dam height, slope and ground motion on failure modes of dams are systematically studied. The results are valuable for the design of projects, the standard of safety assessment and the choice of the anti-seismic measures.
