Abstract
Due to the contaminant accumulation and the weight of capping, consolidation will happen in the impervious barrier of the landfill liner. In addition to the induced advection of contaminant, the consolidation effect can change the structure and give rise to volume change of barrier. For this reason, transport coefficients, such as hydraulic conductivity and diffusion coefficient, will be changed with the consolidation process. The influence of barrier consolidation on transport coefficients is considered, and a contaminant transport model is established. The Crank-Nicolson finite difference method is used to discretize the one-dimensional mathematical model which describes the process of contaminant transport through deforming barrier. The computer program is developed to compute the distribution of contaminant concentration in the barrier, and analysis is made based on the computed results.
