Geomechanics development in civil construction in Western China

  • The state of arts for the special geomechanic problems for loess,frozen soil,and jointed rock materials encountered in civil construction in the Western Development of China,is presented and discussed deeply.The author believed:(1)the most important research for loess is the micro structural features of the loess;(2)the most reliable research for frozen soil should be the further experimental studies on the coupled behaviors of the water migration,heat transfer and thawing deformation of the freezing soil mass instead of frozen soil sample;(3)the most difficult and most reliable study on jointed rock materials is the dynamic properties of the jointed medium instead of the continuous medium or the static properties of the jointed materials;(4)the most urgent research should be the dynamic stability analysis theory of the high arch dams under earthquake loadings.
