Back analysis of performance of high fill embankment on soft soils based on field data

  • Constructing high-fill embankment over soft soils will lead to a substantial deformation of foundation, therefore it is necessary to strictly monitor the settlement and pore water pressure of the foundation. A high-fill airport pavement project in Republic of Guyana is introduced. The settlement and pore water pressure are obtained based on the monitoring data. Using the introduced back analysis method based on the monitoring data of settlement and pore water pressure at the first loading stage, the coefficient of consolidation is obtained and the development of settlement at the second stage is predicted. The relationship between the coefficient of pore water pressure and the backfilling rate is proposed based on the field data. The findings and discussions may provide a guide for the monitoring project of high-fill embankment constructed on soft soils.
